Galway Peace Activist improsend by protest against the criminal misuse of the Shannon Airport
Events in Ireland have received widespread publicity following the imprisonment of Galway Peace Activist, Margaretta D’Arcy, well known Artist and Playwright for daring to trespass
on the runway at Shannon Airport in October 2013 in protest against the criminal misuse of the Airport for transport of personnel and materiel for US wars in Afghanistan and the Middle East (as I reported to the Gent meeting last year). More details and video links here.
27th January , 2014: Up to 75 people gathered in Galway city centre this afternoon in support of jailed anti-war protester Margaretta D’Arcy. The 79-year-old is serving a three-month prison sentence over her refusal to sign a bond to stay out of unauthorised areas of Shannon Airport. The protest, organised by the Galway Alliance Against War, was addressed by D’Arcy’s son Finn Arden. He described his mother’s condition as mentally alert and very articulate. Mr Arden called on people to support his mother’s case. He asked people to show their support by gathering at the entrance to Shannon Airport on Sunday 9 February.
Margaretta Ruth D’Arcy (born 1934), an Irish actress, writer, playwright, and peace-activist. Margaretta is a member of Irish artists Institution, Aosdána, since its inauguration and is known for addressing Irish politica issues, civil liberties, and women’s rights in her work. In January 2014, she was imprisoned after she refused to sign a bond saying that she wouldn’t trespass on non-public parts of Shannon Airport. Her arrest was a consequence of trespassing on airport property during protests over US Military landings at Shannon Airport.. She has written and produced many plays, including The Non-Stop Connolly Show.D’Arcy has also written a number of books, including Tell Them Everything, Awkward Corners (with John Arden), and Galway’s Pirate Women: A Global Trawl.
