In the past week there have been some important developments around the Dutch nuclear base near Volkel. The local newspaper Brabants Nieuwsblad reported last Monday that two times in the week before a big military transport plane C-17 Globemaster III has landed there. Yesterday a C-17A belonging to US Air Mobility Command came directly from the US without a stop at Ramstein to Volkel. Apache attack helicopters were constantly hoovering above the base last week.
A spokesman from the Dutch Air Force said that a big exercise is taking place, a so-called ‘base defence’ whereby the base is completely sealed of from the outside world. Screens are being set up around the fence so  nobody can see what is going on inside.
There is much speculation om whether the exercise is either a smokescreen around the transportation of nuclear weapons from or towards the base or that such an operation is simulated during the exercise.
