Michael Klare on U.S. & China, A New Tonkin Gulf Incident in the Making?
recommended by Joseph Gerson
Friends,
It’s no surprise that Trump is working hard to distract our attention from his monumental failures by scapegoating China. He is desperate not to lose November’s election. And, Beijing’s leadership has certainly created its openings for Trump.
BUT, missing from the barrage of daily news reports is what Col. Lawrence Willkerson, formerly Secretary of Defense Colin Powell’s chief of staff, has described as Trump dangerously sticking his finger in China’s eye with aircraft carrier deployments within striking range of Beijing, Shanghai and much of China. Similarly, there has been almost no news about dangerous naval confrontations in the South China Sea or comment about the possibility of Donald Trump creating a military incident to rally support for his lagging reelection campaign.
I’ve long had the privilege of working with and learning from Michael Klare, the Five College Professor of Peace and World Security Studies and Defense Editor at The NATION Magazine. Michael has written two articles about the increasingly dangerous U.S.-Chinese military confrontation that I want to share with you. You’ll find them at:
