A missile was fired from the Landes missile test centre at 10am this Wednesday morning.
A big bang was heard this Wednesday morning at 10 am in the region of Biscarrosse and Mimizan. The origin of this detonation comes from a firing of M51 missile organized by the General Directorate of Armaments (DGA Essais de missiles) located in Biscarrosse.
The M-51, designed to carry a nuclear warhead, is fired from the ground towards the Atlantic Ocean, where it will fall into the sea. It is a 12-metre high missile that can weigh up to 56 tonnes.
For almost a week, the site has been under heavy surveillance with a large deployment of the police. The same operation had been organised in October 2015 from the same launch site. The Ministry of Defence said at the time that the operation had been “a real success”. This was the seventh launch of the programme, which aims to test France’s nuclear deterrent equipment.
