 On Tuesday, February 8, a public act was held at the “Teatro del Barrio” in Madrid to present the campaign organized by the “NOT TO NATO” Assembly of Madrid, aimed at expressing the strong popular opposition to the holding of the Summit of NATO´s Heads of State and Government, summoned in Madrid on 29 , 30 June of this year.

The act had been organized by the FAI (Internationalist Antiimperialist Front) and joined by the NATO Assembly : “NOT TO NATO”-, a confluence of dozens of organizations based in this city, the FAI among them- to report on the true nature of NATO, the importance of the forthcoming Summit, the need to be organized for an adequate response and the action plans we are developing within the Assembly.

The event was introduced and conducted by our colleague Ángeles Diez, who emphasized the need to recover the memory of the anti-NATO and antiwar movement of our people as well as to contribute with all our strength to raise awareness of the consequences that NATO entails on the peoples´ lives, not only in the countries being attacked, but also in the neglect of the social needs of our own people as a result of the obscene diversion of resources for military expenditure.

Our colleague Manuel Pardo gave a summary characterization of NATO as a criminal organization based on its record of lies, deceit, breaches of commitments and violations of international law.

Eduardo Hernández, also a FAI´s member, brought forward the plans that NATO foresees to approve at its June summit, which are of great significance because they mean the adaptation of the Organization to the enormous transformation that the big transnational capital is designing to ensure accumulation, in what it is known as the Great Reset, as a reaction to the obvious systemic crisis. This is going to have enormous consequences on peoples’ lives , leading to levels of dissatisfaction, protest and rebellion thus requiring a NATO well trained to face it, both in its interventions abroad and inside the societies themselves.

Sara Neila, on behalf of the NOT TO NATO Assembly of Madrid, submitted the constitution and objectives of the Assembly, on which it has already been working for a few months now, as well as the action plans it is developing to show our opposition to NATO and the renewal of the Defense Agreement with the US ( military bases in Spain), aimed at holding an international Counter-Summit and large mobilizations around the event itself.

During the event, messages of support were projected from various organizations and renowned public figures from other Spanish communities and abroad, including the international network “No-To-War/ No- To NATO”. Also took part in this presentation event, Xosé Luis Rivera, from the FIGA (Confederación Intersindical Gallega) trade union, who had come from Galicia for the occasion.

After putting forward the importance of the contribution of the world of art and culture both in the awakening of people’s conscience and in taking on engagements to fight for a fairer world, the artists Juan José Anaya, José Morales and José María Alfaya interpreted some songs from the anti-NATO and anti-bases songbook,

Angeles closed the event calling for everyone’s commitment to actively collaborate in raising awareness and participate in the activities that will be announced in due course.
