               The movement in Australia has had a number of campaigns over the past 50 years to build understanding of the role of Pine Gap, which is near Alice Springs, in the US war fighting . It is a highly secure US base with no Australian government control. Our last IPAN national conference was held in Alice Springs and included a protest and attempted occupation of Pine Gap.

               Yes the role of the US in the removal of the Whitlam ALP government has been much discussed. the US Ambassador at the time, Marshall Green, had been previously in Chile duringthe coup there. The Whitlam government was moving to reduce the role of Pine Gap when it was removed.

               this is what I found: Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Act 1998 (the ARPANS Act), and the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (the EPBC Act). These Acts expressly prohibit the approval, licensing, construction, or operation of a nuclear fuel fabrication plant; a nuclear power plant; an enrichment plant; or a reprocessing facility. There is also a range of other legislation, including state and territory legislation, which regulates nuclear and radiation-related activities.

               FYI the text from my talk today with links IPAN AUKUS and NATO talk 15/3/22

               I come to you from the lands First Nations people in Australia, peoples who have lived continuously and sustainably here for over 50 thousand years and who over the past 230 years have been subjected to invasion occupation and violence. Their time is coming for recognition, voice, truth and treaty as their people grow in strength.

               To begin it is important to let you know that we in IPAN are united in our demands for Peace in Ukraine have condemned the Russian invasion.

               We call for an immediate ceasefire and genuine negotiations between Ukraine and Russia to bring peace and justice to the people of Ukraine.  The working people of Ukraine have the right to self-determination and sovereignty, to determine their country’s future.

               This war is between big powers (US/NATO/Russia) for control of spheres of influence in Europe, particularly East Europe. It is clear Ukraine is a proxy in this big powers’ war. The Ukrainian and Russian people

Ludo De Brabander is a Belgian writer and spokesman for the Belgian peace organisation Vrede vzw.

 

 

Kate Hudson, UK, has been General Secretary of Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) since September 2010. Prior to this she served as the organisation’s Chair from 2003. She is a leading anti-nuclear and anti-war campaigner nationally and internationally.

 

 

Joseph Gerson, USA, is President of the Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Common Security (CPDCS), Co-founder of the Committee for a SANE U.S. China Policy and Vice President of the International Peace Bureau (IPB).

 

 

Annette Brownly, Australia, is a long time antiwar and peace activist, she helped to establish the Independent and Peaceful Australia Network (IPAN), is the current Chair of IPAN and manages a United Nations Assn of Australia Peace and Security program.
