Joint Action “Peace Wave” for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
77th Year of the A-Bombing of Hiroshima & Nagasaki:
Let us Bring Success in the International Joint Action “Peace Wave” for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
July 20, 2022
Organizing Committee, World Conference against A and H Bombs
Dear friends,
The 77th Hiroshima Day and Nagasaki Day are just around the corner.
With the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian forces, repeated threat of the use of nuclear weapons, consolidation of the nuclear posture on the pretext of “deterrence” by the US and its NATO allies, the danger of actual use of nuclear weapons is growing.
To challenge this situation, stop the use or threat of nuclear weapons and move forward towards achieving a “nuclear weapon-free, peaceful and just world”, we will meet in the 2022 World Conference against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs on Aug. 4 through 9 in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And at the same time we will launch the international joint action “Peace Move”, the chain of grassroots actions for the single common objective of the elimination of nuclear weapons, starting from Hiroshima and Nagasaki and encircling the globe during the same period of time. We once again call on you to join us in this campaign.
The development of the Russian war against Ukraine proves that nuclear weapons are neither a “deterrent” nor a “guarantee of security,” but only a tool for major powers to threaten and dominate other countries by force. The threat or use of nuclear weapons is a sheer violation of international law that prohibits the threat or use of force in resolving international conflicts.
At the period when the 2022 World Conference against A and H Bombs and the “Peace Wave” are taking place, the Review Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Aug. 1 through 26. The NPT, while prohibiting non-nuclear weapon states from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons, makes it an obligation for the five nuclear powers (US, Russia, UK, France and China) to negotiate for nuclear disarmament. In the face of the demands from governments and people of the world, the nuclear weapon states also have promised to accomplish the complete elimination of their nuclear arsenals and to achieve a “world without nuclear weapons.” They are duty-bound to implement their promise without delay.
Governments around the world which stand for peace against nuclear weapons achieved in cooperation with civil society movements the entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW). They met in June this year in Vienna for the First Meeting of States Parties to the TPNW to further promote the universalization of the treaty. In the coming NPT Review Conference, too, participating countries and civil society movements are going to urge the nuclear weapon states to implement their obligation and promises. Through our “2022 Peace Wave” actions, let us convey to international politics the voices of the sovereign people of each country from the grassroots of the world, demanding that they should not use nuclear weapons, keep their promises, and abolish nuclear weapons immediately.
Dear friends,
The Hibakusha, the survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, continue to call for the abolition of nuclear weapons in their lifetime, claiming that they are weapons of evil, with which humans cannot coexist. In these two cities, too, most of the victims of the atomic bombs used in the war launched by their government were innocent civilians, including women and children (they account for 86% of all the victims according to the survey by Nihon Hidankyo, the Hibakusha’s national organization).
Many people in Japan and around the world have already responded to our call by collecting signatures in support of the abolition of nuclear weapons or for their governments to join the TPNW. A variety of actions are being planned, including photo panels exhibitions on the damage of Hiroshima, Nagasaki or by nuclear tests, rallies, vigils and online webinars. We call on all of you around the world to join these activities or plan your own local Peace Wave actions.
